The people of Bremen are not afraid of floods because the city is protected by many dykes. However, not only the flood protection makes the dykes to important places in the Hanseatic city with the four rivers Weser, Wümme, Ochtum and Lesum. With their green areas and wonderful views overlooking the water, they are a centre of life for many Bremen residents, especially on sunny days.
In addition, the wet meadows and shoreline areas around the dykes also play an important role for biodiversity. This is why these landscapes are often designated as nature reserves, where numerous animals and plants find suitable habitats.
