The themed zoo by the sea is one of the smallest in Germany, but its diversity of aquatic and Nordic animal species is always worth a visit. Go on a discovery tour and get to know the almost 300 animals as you walk around.
Here you can discover 47 animal species on approx. 12,000 m². The animals on display are mainly from colder regions, such as polar foxes, polar bears, seals, fur seals and penguins. On your tour, however, you will also be able to observe chimpanzees, pumas and various bird species through large panorama windows. For children, there is a large adventure playground and discovery trails. As a highlight, penguins, sea lions and raccoons are fed in public every day. The exact feeding times are posted at the entrance.
The visitor area is largely accessible. Only the viewing terraces are not accessible with a wheelchair/wheelchair or pram.
The Zoo am Meer was established in 1913. The first North Sea aquarium was created at that time by the senior teacher Dr. Heinrich Lübben. But this was only the beginning. In 1928, the zoo was expanded with the addition of the animal grottos. From then on, polar bears, seals and sea lions were among the attractions. In 2000, the zoo was temporarily closed down for a redesign of the entire facility. After 3 years of construction work, the zoo was reopened on 27 March 2004. The new architectural concept focuses on naturalistic landscapes to show the unique animal species in their original habitat.
