The Schütting with its magnificent interiors and sumptuous furnishings is the home of Bremen's merchants and has been the seat of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce since 1849.

History of the Schütting

The Schütting was built between 1537 and 1538 according to the plans of the master builder Johann dem Buschener and the building went through several construction phases. The east gable in the Renaissance style followed in 1565 and the front gable with a roof gallery in 1594. In addition to the key coat of arms of the town, the traced merchant's coat of arms was also engraved.

Between 1895 and 1899, the market façade was redesigned. The magnificent portal architecture with a flight of steps and the crowning Schütting coat of arms were created. Below it is the Bremen merchants' motto: "Buten un binnen, wagen un winnen". For non-Bremen, the translation of the phrase is: "outside and inside - dare and win".

On 6 and 7 October 1944, the Schütting burned to the ground. But only seven years later, in October 1951, it could be reopened.

Schütting

The Name

Various stories circulate around the name "Schütting". Some speak of the Norwegian derivation of the word "skotting", which stands for meeting houses. Johann Heinrich Dreyer (1670-1737) once mayor of Lübeck, derived it from the verb "to pour", as the merchants' financial resources are "poured together". The third variant speaks of "shooting", either at small model ships that hung in the Schütting or as a term for the levy of taxes.

Chamber of Commerce and Gastronomy

The Bremen Chamber of Commerce has been located in the Schütting building since 1849. The Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of Bremen's business community and around 43,000 companies belong to it.
The restaurant "Due Fratelli" is located in the lower area.
